Fiction on Kickstarter
Novels, short story collections, novellas, fantasy, sci-fi, romance. The base layer of Publishing's backlist economy — and the most accessible category for self-published authors.

What makes this subcategory different
Fiction has the lowest bar in Publishing — but the highest ceiling lives elsewhere.
Fiction closes at 49.7% with a median goal of just $2,500. Independent novelists with a few hundred engaged readers can fund a novella, a special edition, or a trilogy print run without superstar status. But scan the Publishing top 20 and a different pattern emerges at the ceiling: the seven-figure entries are not novels at first launch. They are Will Wight's Cradle special editions, Joe Abercrombie's signed reissues, Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunters reprints. Fiction's high success rate is a feature for the median creator. The very top is reserved for authors who first built audiences elsewhere — Amazon KDP, Royal Road, Wattpad — and who use Kickstarter as the high-margin upsell channel for fans they already have.
